Below you will find the grade level sight words that students are expected to have mastered before moving to the next grade. You can use these lists to practice. You can create custom flashcards on the SIGHT WORDS website above or make them the old-fashioned way with a stack of index cards.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD

Show your child each word and see if they can tell you what it is. They know a word if they immediately say the word when they see it. If they know a word, it should be removed from the stack. If your child hesitates, then the word should be kept in the stack and practiced along with all the words they can't read. It shouldn't take longer than 10 minutes to go through the stack and this should be done at least once a day. If your child really struggles with their grade level words, please go back to a previous grade's sight words and help your child master these words first. If your child has mastered their grade level sight words, feel free to go to the next year's words.

There are many different approaches you could take when practicing this with your child. You can make a game with this. You could challenge your child to reach a goal. I have found that if you break the stack into smaller bundles of words and have your child master this smaller stack they will meet their goals faster. Focus on successes!
